Session #1: Eliminate SQL Server Downtime – Even for maintenance
No enterprise can afford to be down. Whether private or public, Fortune 100 or startup, the objective is the same: keep the business running, your customers and partners depend on it.
This presentation will provide you with an overview of current high availability solutions for SQL Server. You'll learn how you can implement active-active databases to protect critical applications from unplanned outages, eliminate the need for scheduled maintenance windows and improve application scalability and performance by better utilizing your existing hardware.
Topics Covered: - Business impact of both planned and unplanned database outages - Availability solutions for SQL Server: clustering, mirroring - Disaster recovery --- easily solving the geographical disaster recovery problem - Scaling up with a multiple server database Grid - Running reports without compromising OLTP - Putting continuous availability into practice
Speaker Profile: David Tung (Solutions Architect, xkoto, Inc) was one of the core developers of xkoto GRIDSCALE during xkoto's founding in 2005. As a solutions architect, he has consulted at many major European and North American customers implementing high availability solutions.
Session #2: Designing Effective Aggregations in Analysis Services 2008
Building aggregations is one of the most important ways of improving query performance in Analysis Services, but simply running the Aggregation Design Wizard doesn't always result in useful aggregations being built. This session shows the steps you need to go through in order to build aggregations that are actually going to be used by the queries that you're running.
Speaker Profile: Chris Webb (Crossjoin Consulting) is an independent consultant who has been working with the Microsoft Business Intelligence toolset since 1998. His main focus is Analysis Services - complex MDX queries and calculations are his particular interest - although he has much experience with Reporting Services, Integration Services and various other related tools. He has worked both as a consultant, including three years with Microsoft Consulting Services, and on internal BI development projects in a wide range of industries including pharmaceuticals, banking, finance, manufacturing, engineering and retail. He is a co-author of the book "MDX Solutions with Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services 2005 and Hyperion Essbase" along with George Spofford and others, and is an active member of the Microsoft BI community, contributing regularly to newsgroups and online forums and speaking at conferences.
